A door assembly specifically designed and tested to resist the spread of fire and smoke between building compartments. Fire doors are critical life-safety components required by building codes in stairwells, corridors, tenant separations, and other fire-rated wall openings.
Fire doors carry ratings of 20, 45, 60, 90, or 180 minutes based on NFPA 252 or UL 10C fire tests. The complete assembly-door, frame, hardware, glazing, and seals-must be tested and labeled together. Steel doors use 20, 18, or 16 gauge face sheets with insulated cores. Wood fire doors use mineral core or fire-retardant treated lumber.
Required hardware includes self-closing devices (door closers or spring hinges), positive latching, and labeled hinges. Intumescent seals expand when heated to block smoke and flame. Annual inspection and maintenance are required per NFPA 80. Fire doors must never be propped open unless equipped with magnetic hold-open devices connected to fire alarm.
