Mag Hold Open

See Door Holder. An electromagnetic device that holds fire doors open during normal operation and releases automatically upon fire alarm activation. Mag hold-opens are the only code-compliant way to prop fire doors open.

Components include an electromagnet (wall or floor mounted) and a metal armature plate (door mounted). When energized, the magnet holds the armature with 20-80 lbs of force. Fire alarm signal removes power, releasing the door to close via its closer.

Installation requires connection to the building fire alarm system and a dedicated power source. Single-point and multi-point configurations are available. Wall-mounted holds work for standard swing; floor-mounted accommodates various angles. Related: fire door, door holder, door closer. Shop electromagnetic hold-opens.
