Electromagnetic Lock

An access control locking device using magnetic force to secure doors, consisting of an electromagnet on the frame head and armature plate on the door. Commonly called mag locks, these devices provide fail-safe operation-doors unlock when power is removed.

Holding forces range from 600 lbs (light duty) to 1,500 lbs (heavy duty) for single doors. Double mag locks securing at both head and sill provide 3,000 lbs holding force. Bond sensors confirm door-secure status. Surface-mounted, semi-concealed, and fully concealed versions are available.

Fail-safe operation means doors unlock during power failure, making mag locks suitable for egress doors. Code requires request-to-exit (REX) devices-typically motion sensors or push buttons-for egress. Fire alarm tie-in releases locks during fire events. Related: electric strike, access control.
