Egress Door

A door that forms part of the building’s means of egress-the path occupants use to exit during emergencies. Egress doors must meet strict code requirements for swing direction, hardware, and minimum width.

IBC (International Building Code) requires egress doors to swing in the direction of travel when serving 50+ occupants. Minimum clear width is 32″ (36″ typical), with maximum operating force of 5 lbf for interior doors and 15 lbf at latch release. Door height must be minimum 80″ clear.

Hardware requirements include panic hardware for assembly occupancies (50+), operable hardware between 34″ and 48″ AFF, and no locks requiring keys, special knowledge, or tools to open from egress side. Delayed egress locks (15-30 second delay with alarm) are permitted in specific occupancies. Related: fire door, panic hardware. Browse egress-compliant doors.
