FORMERLY MCKINNEY DOOR SOLUTIONS & AMERICAN DOOR PRODUCTS - NOW UNITED AS AMERICAN DOORS.
A mechanical bearing that connects a door to its frame, enabling the door to pivot open and closed. Hinges must support the full weight of the door while allowing smooth, repeated operation over thousands of cycles.
Commercial hinges are typically made from steel, stainless steel, or brass, with finishes including satin chrome, oil-rubbed bronze, and primed for painting. Standard commercial doors require three hinges for doors up to 7’0″ tall, with an additional hinge for each 30″ of height beyond that. Hinge size is determined by door thickness, width, and weight-a standard 3’0″ x 7’0″ hollow metal door uses 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ hinges.
Common types include butt hinges (most common), continuous hinges (full-length for high-traffic doors), pivot hinges (for heavy or oversized doors), and concealed hinges (for clean aesthetics). Fire-rated doors require steel hinges with specific certifications. Leading manufacturers include McKinney, Ives, and Hager.
