A door closer feature that holds the door open for an extended period before closing begins, allowing time for people with disabilities, those carrying items, or equipment to pass through. Delayed action is an ADA accessibility feature.
Delay periods are adjustable, typically from 1 to 30 seconds. The door holds at any position between 70 degrees and 180 degrees open, then closes at normal regulated speed. Combined with a backcheck valve, delayed action prevents damage from forceful opening.
Delayed action closers are specified for accessible entries, healthcare facilities, schools, and anywhere extended hold-open is beneficial but automatic hold-open (magnetic) is not appropriate. The closer continues to operate normally if pushed closed during delay period. Related: door closer, door holder. Shop door closers.
