Borrowed Light

A window or glazed opening in an interior wall or door that allows light to pass between spaces, “borrowing” light from a brighter area to illuminate darker spaces. Borrowed lights reduce need for artificial lighting.

Interior transoms, sidelights, and vision panels in doors all function as borrowed lights. Glass options include clear (maximum light, no privacy), translucent/frosted (light with privacy), and decorative patterns.

Fire-rated borrowed lights in fire-rated walls require fire-rated glazing with proper frames. Sound transmission through borrowed lights can be controlled with acoustic glass or insulated units. Related terms: transom, sidelight, glazing. Browse frame configurations.
