Rail

Home Glossary Rail

The horizontal members of a door’s frame structure that connect the vertical stiles. Rails provide structural support, house hardware, and in panel doors create the framework for decorative or glass panels.

Standard rail designations include top rail (uppermost), bottom rail (lowermost, typically wider for kick resistance), lock rail (at handle height, approximately 38″ from bottom), and intermediate rails between panels. Rail widths typically range from 4″ to 10″, with bottom rails often 8″ to 10″ to withstand foot traffic and prevent damage.

In flush door construction, the lock rail is a solid blocking area at lock height that provides structural support for hardware attachment. Lite rails surround glass openings and require specific dimensions for fire-rated applications. Raised panel doors feature rails with decorative profiles that match the stile moldings.
