Lintel

Home Glossary Lintel

The horizontal structural member spanning the top of a door or window opening, supporting the wall load above. In commercial construction, lintels are typically steel angles or channels integrated with the door frame head.

Lintel sizing depends on opening width and wall loads above. Light-gauge steel frames incorporate the lintel function; heavy masonry openings require separate steel lintels (typically L-angles or channels). Lintel bearing at each end should be minimum 4″ onto solid support.

For fire-rated assemblies, the frame head and wall construction above must maintain the fire barrier. Knock-down frames may require separate lintel installation. Concrete-filled hollow metal frames provide structural lintel function. Related terms: jamb, door frame. Shop hollow metal frames.
